The Future of Technology Jobs

Everyone knows the impact that technology has had on our lives from smart phones, tablets, cloud services and more. They have made our lives better, more productive and keeps us all connected. Technology not only has given us more toys and services but also created an opportunity for careers that promise to raise our standard of living for years to come. This is a very good thing. However, here is the better news – as a result of the growth in technologies the future of technology jobs are growing even faster.  Here is what the US Bureau of Labor Statistics predicted:

“Employment of computer and information technology occupations is projected to grow 12 percent from 2018 to 2028, much faster than the average for all occupations. These occupations are projected to add about 546,200 new jobs. Demand for these workers will stem from greater emphasis on cloud computing, the collection and storage of big data, and information security.

The median annual wage for computer and information technology occupations was $86,320 in May 2018, which was higher than the median annual wage for all occupations of $38,640”

The Role of the IT Project Manager

The future growth of technology positions means more technology projects will be started. Which also means more support will be needed to manage those technology projects. This increases the need in the job market for information technology project managers to manage those technology projects.

Enter the Information Technology (IT) Project Manager. Project managers provide a valuable contribution to the technical team and the IT Projects they manage that includes:

  • Assisting with defining the scope of work
  • Developing and managing the technology project schedule
  • Managing project resources
  • Managing status reporting and communications
  • Managing project risks and issues
  • Managing project and technical documentation
  • Developing, mentoring and managing the project team
  • Being a liaison with the business and senior management
  • Working to resolve project conflicts and challenges
  • Manage project costs. budgets
  • Manage lessons learned

The Qualities of an IT Project Manager

IT Project Managers should possess some basic skills to ensure success. Here are a few:

  • Solid understanding of technology
  • Good communication skills
  • A problem solver; likes challenges
  • Good organization skills
  • Likes working with people
  • Willingness to continue to learn
  • Diligent

When starting your IT Project Management career, you can begin as a Project Coordinator or Jr. Project Manager until you gain enough experience to manage larger more complex projects. However you choose to begin, once you get started you will find a rewarding career in IT Project Management at a time when the demand for people with this skill set is expected to grow.
